The Town of Dauphin Island operates under a mayor and council form of government. Policy-making and legislative authority is vested in the mayor and City Council. (A similar situation occurred in the 1600s and created Pelican Bay, which was one of the reasons the French first settled here.) The Pier structure has now been modified to provide sightseeing and picnicking. Steps at the end of the Pier give quick access to the Gulf shoreline.
