- West End Nature Preserve
Welcome to the West End Nature Preserve A Sanctuary for Birds, Turtles, and Coastal Wildlife Discover the beauty and biodiversity of Dauphin Island’s West End Nature Preserve—a pristine stretch of 838 acres of beach and dune habitat. As part of the Migratory Flyway, this area serves as a vital stopover for migratory birds, a nesting ground for shorebirds, and a refuge for coastal wildlife. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a birdwatcher, or simply seeking a serene escape, the West End is a place where wildlife and conservation come alive. Explore the Wildlife of the West End The West End is a haven for bird species, including those of highest conservation concern: American Oystercatcher With its striking orange beak and bold black-and-brown plummage, this shorebird can be found near tidal flats. Piping Plover These small, pale sand-colored birds are a delight to spot as they dart along the beach. Snowy & Wilson’s Plovers Both species are well-camouflaged in the sand and rely on the preserve for nesting. You might also encounter gull-billed terns, the stunning reddish egret, and flocks of red knots during migration. Coastal Wildlife From the shimmering salt marshes to thesweeping dunes, the preserve is teeming withlife. Watch for crabs scuttling along thebeach, fish jumping in the surf, and dolphinsplaying just offshore. Sea Turtles The West End beaches are also important nesting grounds for sea turtles, which return to these shores year after year to lay their eggs. Look for roped-off areas marking protected nests and give hatchlings plenty of space as they make their way to the water. How to Enjoy the Preserve Responsibly Stay near the shoreline to protect sensitive dune and nesting habitats. Leave pets at home—their presence can disturb wildlife and nests. Observe wildlife from a distance and use binoculars for a closer look. Respect marked areas that protect nesting birds and sea turtles. Plan Your Visit The West End Nature Preserve is open year-round and oers an incredible opportunity to connect with nature. Whether you’re here to explore the island’s diverse bird species, enjoy a peaceful walk along the beach, or learn more about conservation, the West End has something for everyone. Together, we can protect this extraordinary ecosystem and ensure it thrives for generations to come.
