The Town of Dauphin Island has successfully secured funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundaiotn Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund (NFWFGEBF) to restore approximately 25 acres of marsh habitat of Graveline Bay. The marsh plants continue to grow to fill in the marsh mounds. The project was monitored by the Dauphin Island Sea Lab over three years (2023-2025). Piping Plover These small, pale sand-colored birds are a delight to spot as they dart along the beach. Snowy & Wilson’s Plovers Both species are well-camouflaged in the sand and rely on the preserve for nesting. You might also encounter gull-billed terns, the stunning reddish egret, and flocks of red knots during migration. Coastal Wildlife From the shimmering salt marshes to thesweeping dunes, the preserve is teeming withlife. Watch for crabs scuttling along thebeach, fish jumping in the surf, and dolphinsplaying just offshore. Sea Turtles The West End beaches are also important nesting grounds for sea turtles, which return to these shores year after year to lay their eggs. Look for roped-off areas marking protected nests and give hatchlings plenty of space as they make their way to the water. How to Enjoy the Preserve Responsibly Stay near the shoreline to protect sensitive dune and nesting habitats. Leave pets at home—their presence can disturb wildlife and nests. Observe wildlife from a distance and use binoculars for a closer look. Respect marked areas that protect nesting birds and sea turtles.
