 Be Prepared! there are  many things you must do before, during and after the storm hits!At the beginning of the hurricane season, make PLANS TO LEAVE if the threat of a hurricane is eminent.

· Purchase your Dauphin Island Re-Entry Pass from the Dauphin Island Police Department as soon as possible. If you have one, make sure it has not expired. If it is expired, stop by the Police Department to renew it.
· Notify relatives or friends that you may visit “unexpectedly” during the next six months.  
· Select a nice motel in an inland city you want to visit.  
· Names and locations of public shelters are given out at time of evacuation notice.

YOU SHOULD
LEAVE!
WHEN A HURRICANE WATCH IS ISSUED FOR OUR AREA
· Stay tuned for official bulletins on radio and TV.
· There is a possibility evacuation may be necessary during the watch period.  
· Fuel your vehicles
· Move your boats and motor homes to a safe shelter/harbor.  (Don’t
wait until the last minute.)
· Stock up on canned provisions, water, batteries, etc
· Make sure you have a hand held can opener, matches and propane tanks filled.  
· Secure lawn furniture and other loose outdoor material
· Tape, board, or shutter windows to prevent shattering.
· Wedge sliding glass doors to prevent their lifting from their tracks.  
· Gather items you will need during the evacuation period (i.e. medications, clothing, Re-Entry Card, first aid kit, etc.)  
WHEN A HURRICANE WARNING IS ISSUED FOR OUR AREA  
LEAVE EARLY – in daylight if possible.  
· Shut off water, electricity, and LP gas at main stations.
· Travel light – take small valuables and papers – Don’t forget your RE-ENTRY CARD! 
·  Care for pets – remember public shelters will not take pets.  Some motels do, so make your reservations early.
·  Lock up your home.  
·  Drive carefully and be patient!
WHEN THE HURRICANE WARNING HAS EXPIRED
·   Stay tuned for official return bulletins on radio and TV.  Be certain you will be allowed on Dauphin Island before attempting to return.  You may contact the Mobile County EMA for confirmation of re-entry.  
·   Drive carefully; watch for dangling electrical wires, undermined and flooded roads, flooded low spots.  
·   Do not sightsee.
·   Report damaged water, sewer, and electrical lines to the local authorities.  
·   Use caution re-entering your home.  

If you decide to stay during a hurricane, please contact the Police Department and give your name, address, and telephone number of next of kin!  Advise them of the location you will be staying during the hurricane.  If you choose to stay, and later change your mind, it may be too late!
